Description
Nos. 55 and 57 on High Street are a pair of houses dating from the 18th century, with a refacing in the 19th century. They are constructed from coursed blue lias rubble and brick, featuring a steeply pitched pantiled roof. The buildings have a first-floor brick band on the south gable and rear, and an eaves band on the north gable. There are two ridge stacks and one external gable stack.
The houses are two storeys plus garrets and have four windows. The southern facade includes an off-centre 19th-century half-glazed door, with a two-pane shop window and door above it to the south, along with a single 19th-century two-light Yorkshire sash and a smaller Yorkshire sash. The south gable has a single 19th-century glazing bar casement, and in the garret, there is a two-light Yorkshire sash.
On the northern facade, there is a central 19th-century panelled door flanked by single margin pane sashes with segmental heads, and above, there are two similar sashes. The north gable features a single 20th-century fixed light, with a single 19th-century two-light Yorkshire sash above it, and wall ties in the form 'W D' above that. There are 19th-century extensions to the rear, which are now in separate occupation.
