Description
93, 95, and 97 West Gate are three houses that originally served as knitters' workshops and are now three shops. They were built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of coursed squared stone, with the front painted, and feature painted stone dressings and a slate roof that has two ridge stacks, one of which has been rebuilt in brick.
The structure includes a plinth and an eaves band, with projecting painted stone surrounds around the windows. The buildings rise to three storeys and have a three-window arrangement, with two 12-pane sash windows on the left and a similar sash window on the right. Above these, there are three 9-pane sash windows arranged in the same pattern. The ground floor has three late 20th-century shop fronts; the left one is rendered, while both outer fronts have plain rendered doorcases.
On the right gable, there is a central segment-headed 8-pane casement window, and above it, to the right, is a 3-light Yorkshire sash window. The rear of the buildings features three 4-light knitters' windows on the second floor, which have been partly reglazed.
