Description
The Anglo Saxon cross, dating from the 11th century, is located 50 meters east of the Church of St. Helen in Stapleford. It is made of ashlar with a dressed stone base and features a tapered square base topped with a spiked iron railing, which dates to around 1820. The shaft of the cross is also tapered and is adorned with interlace decoration, as well as carvings of an angel and a serpent. The cross stands approximately 3 meters high and has a lead cap. It was restored and moved in 1760, restored again in 1820, and re-sited once more in 1928. This cross is considered to be the most significant pre-Conquest monument in Nottinghamshire, according to Pevsner. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County No. 6.
