Description

The Cemetery Chapel and Mortuary, built in 1880 for Joseph Fearfield, is designed in the style of the 13th and 14th centuries. It features a linked archway and is constructed of brick and ashlar with slate roofs. The building has ashlar dressings, a chamfered plinth, and eaves, along with moulded sill bands that have stops. The gables are shouldered and coped, with gabled kneelers. Most windows are lancets with linked hood moulds and stops.

The chapel and mortuary are single-storey structures with three bays. On the west side, there is a central stilted segmental arch supported by ringed shafts, flanked by corner buttresses with two set-offs. Above the arch is a granite lintel inscribed with "This Cemetery ground is the gift of Joseph Fearfield, Esqre. Stapleford 1880." The east side is similar but lacks ornamentation and features four 13th-century style pinnacles.

The octagonal spire has a stepped base with a gable and cross on the west side. The bell stage includes eight double lancet louvred openings and moulded eaves with gargoyles. The spire is topped with four gabled lucarnes, a finial, and a cross. There is a flanking porch on the left with a 20th-century casement, and a porch on the right with a chamfered unglazed trefoil.

Both the mortuary and chapel have a central buttress on the west side, two lancets, and above, a spherical triangle window with a hood mould. Above this, there is a small triple lancet. The east ends are similar but do not have buttresses. The chapel features a central buttressed gabled porch with a 13th-century style doorway with shafts and a shouldered moulded inner doorway. The mortuary has a similar porch with a 20th-century door, flanked by flat-roofed 20th-century additions. Inside, there are shouldered doorways on each side, and the chapel contains 19th-century benches and a desk.
