Description

The Grotto is a structure built around 1765 by Stephen Wright for the Duke of Newcastle. It is constructed from rockfaced ashlar and features a slab roof. The building is single storey and consists of a single bay. It has a plinth and cornice that include heavy echinus moulding. The front of the Grotto has a semi-circular arch with projecting keystones, and there are similar smaller arches in the return angles. A central doorway is also present. Inside, there is a late 19th-century water turbine that drives a three-throw water pump.
