Description

Clumber Bridge, located in Clumber Park, is a three-arched stone road bridge built between 1763 and 1770 by Stephen Wright for the First Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme. The bridge is constructed of ashlar and is oriented on a south-west to north-east axis, featuring splayed abutment walls at both ends.

The bridge has a graceful arc above three unequal semi-circular arches, which have reeded soffits, raised architraves, and projecting fluted keystones. The taller central arch is flanked by plain pilasters that are supported by octagonal cutwaters with domed tops. The outer pair of arches is accompanied by rusticated advanced piers that contain semi-circular headed niches and blank semi-circular headed panels, each adorned with keystones. At the top, a balustrade rests on a dentil cornice. The swept ends of the bridge feature balustrades with moulded coping, which terminate in circular abutment piers that have moulded plinths and domed caps.
