Description
The West Stable Range and Turning Court Wall at Clumber Park is a stable range that has been converted into storerooms and a shop. It dates from the 18th century and is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, topped by a hipped roof made of graduated Westmorland slate. The building features ashlar and brick plinths, dentillated eaves, three ridge stacks, and a single rear wall stack.
The symmetrical facade consists of 15 bays, highlighted by a central bay that projects and is pedimented, flanked by wings. The structure is two storeys high with attics, and all openings are topped with rubbed brick heads. The front includes a central round-arched carriage opening with a projecting keystone and an impost band, which houses a pair of traceried panelled gates with elliptical heads and impressive iron fittings. This is flanked by single round-headed niches, followed by four glazing bar sash windows. To the left, there is a half-glazed door and two more glazing bar sashes; to the right, a 20th-century door with an overlight and two glazing bar sashes. Above these, there are 14 smaller sash windows, and further up, a central Diocletian window is flanked by two pedimented dormers. At the top, there is a square clock tower featuring ashlar quoins, scroll brackets, a moulded string course, and a clock face on each side. Above this, an octagonal cupola with round-headed openings and keystones is capped by a leaded dome with a ball finial and wind vane.
The rear elevation has blank panels, a single Diocletian window, and eight segmental-headed dormers. The turning court wall outside is made of brick with ashlar coping and dressings, featuring intermediate buttresses with ashlar caps and two doors on the west side. The northwest corner has ramped ashlar coping and two ashlar gate piers with recessed panels and pyramidal ashlar caps, while the northeast corner features a round-headed doorway with a striated ashlar lintel and coping.
