Description

The gateway from Manor Farm to the churchyard, along with its attached walls, is located 7 metres west of Manor Farmhouse and dates from the mid-16th century. It was built for the Stanhopes and Babingtons. The structure is made of red brick, ashlar, and terracotta. The gateway features an ashlar wall with moulded and stepped coping. It has a central doorway with a wooden plank door set into a recessed rectangular panel, which is topped with a hood mould and label stops adorned with incised quatrefoils. Above the doorway is a recessed armorial panel, flanked by two smaller armorial panels that are positioned slightly lower. There is also another single armorial panel with a triangular head above these, all of which have raised and moulded edges set into decorative surrounds.

On either side of the gateway, there are red brick walls with heavy moulded ashlar coping. The wall to the west extends 5 metres and includes a single niche, while the wall to the south extends 28 metres and features four niches, terminating in ashlar quoins. All niches have moulded ashlar surrounds, and the four niches on the southern wall contain terracotta panels with worn quatrefoils. The rear, or north side of the gateway mirrors the front, but the doorway is flanked by large carved corbels, and there is a cavetto drip moulding above, decorated with three or four small shields.
