Description
The Hardwick War Memorial is a war memorial that was unveiled in 1918 and designed by W E Tower.
The memorial features a 3.5-meter tall Calvary made of Clipsham stone, which stands on an angular plinth set upon a one-stage base. Bronze plaques are affixed to the plinth, base, and the wall behind, inscribed with the words: "OF YOUR CHARITY PRAY FOR THE REPOSE OF THE SOULS OF THOSE OUR COUNTRYMEN & ALLIES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR ESPECIALLY REMEMBERING THOSE OF THE CLUMBER ESTATE WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE RECORDED/ (18 names) /AND FOR ALL THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR II & ESPECIALLY REMEMBERING/ (6 names)/ REST ETERNAL/ GRANT UNTO THEM/ O LORD/ AND LET LIGHT/ PERPETUAL/ SHINE UPON THEM/ AMEN."
A subsidiary feature of the memorial is an ashlar screen wall located behind the Calvary. This wall is ramped to the center and has short flanking walls, all topped with triangular coping. A low stone kerb outlines the front of the memorial ground.
