Description
The Chantry is a house that was originally built as a choir school and residence for chapel choristers by the Duke of Newcastle in 1912. It is constructed of brick with hipped and gabled plain tile roofs, featuring ashlar dressings, a moulded first floor band, and bracketed eaves. The building has two external side wall stacks and two ridge stacks. Most of the windows are mullioned and transomed leaded casements, with some featuring hood moulds.
The balanced west front has a projecting bay to the right and two shouldered coped gables topped with finials. The structure is two storeys plus attics and consists of four bays. The west front showcases a moulded ashlar doorcase with a corbelled arched pediment that contains a cartouche with the initial 'T'. To the left, there is a canted bay window with a parapet and three casements, while to the right, there are two casements. Above these, there are four casements, one of which is set through the eaves. There is also a flat-roofed leaded dormer with five lights above. The exterior features two decorative rainwater heads and a datestone inscribed '1912' on the left.
The north and south sides of the building have single projecting bays and original irregular fenestration. The mainly original interior includes two brick fireplaces and one ashlar fireplace. Outside, there is an original boarded gate with matching curved flanking fences and domed posts. The Chantry is included in the listing for its group value.
