Description

This is a railway station, station house, and associated outbuildings, opened on 7th July 1849. It was designed in a Jacobean style by Weightman & Hadfield of Sheffield, and constructed by James Drabble of Carlton in Lindrick, for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company. The building is constructed of ashlar with ashlar dressings, and has steep-pitched slate roofs. Features include a chamfered plinth, moulded impost band and string course, and a coped parapet. Three coped gables are present, two and four-banded, with corbelled ridge stacks.

The main facade has a balanced design with a projecting gabled central bay and flanking gabled bays; it is single-storey with 17 unequal bays. The central bay features a round-headed doorway with projecting keystones and a fanlight, flanked by tapering diced pilasters with square bases and moulded capitals, a blocked frieze, and a moulded cornice. Above the doorway is a shouldered shaped gable with an obelisk finial, containing a strapwork panel with a roundel. Each flanking bay has a single tripartite sash with a cornice, and above, a strapwork panel with a roundel and a small blocked light. To the left of the central bay are five plain sashes and a single mullioned window; to the right, six plain sashes and a single mullioned window.

A coursed squared rubble boundary wall, with ramped coping, runs alongside, containing two chamfered doorways and a single square pier with an obelisk finial. A single-bay link connects the station to the station house, featuring a single plain sash.

The station house itself is two storeys plus garrets, with a three-bay L-plan layout. It has a first-floor band, three shaped coped gables, two gable and one roof stack. The projecting bay to the left has a large central plain sash flanked by single smaller sashes, with a surround featuring diced pilasters, a blocked frieze, and a moulded cornice. To the right is a pair of plain sashes. Above the left bay is a plain sash with a hood mould, and above the right bays are three plain sashes. A shaped gable with a small light and an obelisk finial sits above the main section.

To the right are two single-storey ranges of differing heights, totaling seven bays. These include two shaped coped gables, one gable, and one rear wall stack. A centrally projecting bay contains two plain sashes with an intermediate pilaster and quoins; frieze and cornice are also present. Above this is a broken pediment with a segmental centre section and a ball finial. To the left of this projecting bay are three plain sashes, and to the right, two plain sashes and a doorway. A flat-roofed dormer with three casements sits above the right side.

The platform side of the station has late 19th-century glazed iron canopies and a footbridge. The upslope side features a single-storey range with a coped parapet.
