Description
Chequers Inn and attached outbuildings is a public house dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick, ashlar, and coursed rubble, topped with slate and pantile roofs. The public house features a hipped slate roof that extends over the eaves and has two brick ridge stacks at the rear. It stands two storeys tall and has three bays. A central 20th-century brick porch with a double door and over light is flanked by single glazing bar sashes with splayed ashlar lintels. Above, there are three similar sashes and lintels.
To the left and set back is a coursed rubble and pantile outbuilding, which has a hipped single storey front facing east and a gabled two-storey front facing west towards the canal. The canal front includes a central doorway with large double wooden doors, flanked by single glazing bar casements. The south front of this outbuilding has two blocked openings. Attached to the left and set back is another coursed rubble outbuilding featuring a brick west gable and pantile roof. The two-storey west front has a single blocked light with iron bars and a single doorway above it. The single-storey east gable has a single 20th-century casement. The south wall of this outbuilding includes, from right to left, a doorway with a 20th-century door, a single 20th-century casement, and a doorway with double wooden doors.
