Description

The Barracks is a house that was formerly six cottages, built around 1830. It features red brick and ashlar construction with a tiled roof and stone-coped gables that have kneelers. The building is two storeys high and has three bays, each topped with a gable; the central gable is smaller, and there is an additional gable at the end of the cross wing. The outer window bays slightly project from the main structure.

There is a central single-storey gabled brick porch that is corbelled out near the top, with ashlar at this point, an ashlar-coped gable with kneelers, and an entrance arch made of ashlar with two decorative voussoirs. The inner doorway is arched and features a 20th-century glazed door with an overlight. On either side of the porch are single three-light glazing bar casements with wooden mullions and ashlar surrounds. Above these, there are three similar casements and surrounds, although the central one has only two lights. Each of the outer gables has a decorative arrow loop, while the central gable features a decorative blank ashlar shield. The gable stack, which slightly projects at the top, also has a similar ashlar shield.

The south front of the cross wing mirrors the main front, but all the windows here have two lights with glazing bars, and all gables are decorated with a single arrow loop. The inner porch doorway on this side is not arched. The other sides of the building have 19th and 20th-century extensions and alterations.
