Description

Burton Hall is a country house built in 1768 by James Paine for Lord Monson. The building features a south front made of ashlar stone and has a hipped slate roof that is concealed by a parapet, with two ranges of moulded stone stacks. The façade is three stories high and consists of nine bays arranged in a 3:3:3 pattern, with the central three bays slightly advanced and topped with a pediment.

The design includes a plinth, a deep first-floor band with a moulded top, a narrow first-floor sill band, a dentillated cornice, and a pediment. The ground floor has rusticated quoins and a rusticated central stage. The entrance features a central half-glazed door with a fanlight, set in a semi-circular headed opening, flanked by single windows with splayed rusticated heads. On either side of the entrance are three windows with rusticated architraves and full cornices above.

The first floor has three sets of three windows, all with architraves, although only the central windows have cornices. The second floor contains nine square windows, each with two fixed panes above a transom. The front of the building is one bay deep, and at the rear, there is a single-storey wing added in the 20th century, designed by architect John Roberts. A drawing by Nattes from 1793 in the Banks Collection Volume I shows the rear wing as it was originally constructed.
