Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century, with an early 18th-century front and later 18th-century alterations and additions. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with slightly overburnt headers that create a chequered effect. The end wall is rendered, while the rear wall features a catslide made of stone. It has a plain tiled roof with stone-coped raised gables and three brick gable stacks.

The structure is two storeys high with attics and has a five-bay front, including a late 18th-century two-bay extension with an attic to the left. There is a first-floor band and a plain wooden eaves board. The central entrance features a six-panelled door with a fan traceried overlight, surrounded by a wooden door frame with pilasters that end in carved brackets supporting a narrow dentillated cornice. The pilasters are decorated in the Adam style with floral motifs. Flanking the door are single canted bay windows with glazing bar sashes and flat lead roofs.

On the first floor, there are five glazing bar sash windows, and in the roof, three glazing bar sash dormers with lead cheeks and segmental roofs. To the right of the central first-floor window is a metal fire insurance plaque featuring a sun design. The left extension has a dentillated eaves course and an off-centre flush six-panelled door, with a glazing bar sash to the left and a similar window on the first floor. All three openings have segmental heads, as does the leaded dormer.

Inside, there is a dogleg staircase with turned balusters, likely from the early 18th century. The interior also features alcoves with semi-circular heads and keyblocks, with fitted cupboards beneath, located on either side of an imported fireplace in the right-hand room.
