Description
The Old School, now serving as a village hall, was built in 1897 with an addition made in 1919. It features coursed rockfaced limestone with yellow brick dressings and a slate roof that has sprocketed eaves and raised stone coped gables, along with a single octagonal stone wall stack. The building is single storey with a three-bay front. The central chimney bay is slightly advanced and includes a string course above which are three steps leading to a chimney at the gable.
Prominently displayed is a war memorial from 1914-1918 made of Portland stone, flanked by two four-light glazing bar casements that have brick dressings at the eaves. The central gable features a rectangular stone plaque that bears the Monson arms and the date 1897. In front of the building, there is a low limestone rubble wall with wedge-shaped coping that contains a central gateway. This gateway is flanked by low square piers that support seated lions holding shields of arms. The gates themselves are made of wrought iron, adorned with decorative top rails and spearhead terminals.
