Description
Bede House is a Grade II listed almshouse built in 1875. It is constructed from rock-faced limestone ashlar with ashlar dressings and features a plain tiled roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles and eight paired octagonal ashlar stacks, consisting of four on the ridge and four on the wall. The building is single storey with a cellar and plinth, presenting a nine-bay front arranged in a 1:7:1 pattern, where the end bays are advanced and topped with stone-coped gables.
In front of the central seven bays is a loggia, accessible by two flights of steps and enclosed by a low stone wall. The central section has a three-arched opening leading to a through passage, above which is a triangular-headed inscribed tablet commemorating its foundation by William, 7th Baron Monson, in 1875. The facade is symmetrical, featuring a central opening flanked by a three-light window on each side, a door with a plain overlight, a two-light window, and another two-light window in the projecting wings. All windows are designed with chamfered mullions and transoms, topped with plain ashlar lintels. The left gable displays the arms of the Monson family, while the right gable features three stepped lancets.
