Description

Essex House is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and brick dressings, and has a pantiled roof with raised brick coped gables. The house has a T-plan layout, which includes a later rear service range. The building is two storeys high with a garret parlour cross wing and a two-storey attic wing, along with a one-and-a-half storey hall block.

The front facade has four bays and features an off-centre 19th-century six-panelled door with a two-pane overlight that has a decorative wrought iron grille. The wooden doorcase is topped with a narrow moulded hood. In front of the door, there are splayed and ramped wrought iron handrails with twisted balusters and conical knops. To the left of the door is a single tripartite glazing bar sash with a flat arch lintel, while to the right is an 18th-century glazing bar sash. Beyond this, in the cross wing, are glazed double doors with a four-paned overlight.

On the first floor, to the left, there is a four-light through eaves casement in a tile-hung gable, and to the right are two 18th-century glazing bar sashes, all of which have timber lintels. The roof features a two-light dormer with a lead roof and cheeks. In the tumbled brick gable of the cross wing, there is a two-light glazing bar casement with a segmental head.

Inside, the parlour block has moulded and stopped beams, while upstairs features stopped beams. The hall, which was likely the previous kitchen end, has two roughly splayed beams and a 19th-century marble fireplace. The roof structure is of the through purlin type.
