Description

The Granary is a late 18th-century stable block associated with Burton Hall, now converted into two flats. It is likely designed by James Paine and constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The building has a hipped slate roof with lead dressings and two wall stacks.

The front facade consists of seven bays arranged in a 1:5:1 pattern, with the outer bays being slightly advanced. The structure rises three storeys and includes a plinth and overhanging eaves. Central double planked doors are topped with a Diocletian overlight and flanked by single Diocletian windows. Each side of the building features a flight of steps leading to first-floor doorways.

In the projecting wings, there are planked double doors with Diocletian windows above. The first floor contains three glazing bar sash windows, with flush panelled doors at the tops of the staircases, while the projecting wings have single glazing bar sashes. The second floor is fitted with three small fixed rectangular lights, flanked by single blank openings, with additional single pivot lights beyond. All openings are adorned with flush ashlar surrounds and slightly segmental arched heads. On the left end, there is a first-floor two-light casement window. This is a large and finely-designed stable block.
