Description
Leys House, formerly listed as The Leys, is a former school and house built in 1720 and restored in 1855, with some minor alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed ironstone rubble, featuring limestone ashlar quoins and dressings. It has a steeply hipped Collyweston slate roof with lead dressings and a central ashlar stack topped with a cornice. The house is designed in an L-shape and has two storeys with attics, presenting a five-bay front that includes a plinth and a first-floor band.
The central entrance features a six-panelled door set in a moulded ashlar surround, topped by a broken pediment that holds a plaque inscribed with "Learn to know God and thyself, 1720". This door is flanked by pairs of cross mullioned casements. On the first floor, there is an ashlar scrolled coat of arms within a moulded stone surround, also flanked by pairs of two-light casements. All windows are fitted with 20th-century leaded lights and have flat splayed lintels with keystones. The roof includes two hipped two-light dormers.
