Description

Well Head Cottage, formerly known as Castle Farm, is a building that dates back to the early 18th century or earlier. It is located on the site where a Norman castle built by Baldwin FitzGilbert was said to have stood, which replaced a Saxon Manor that was home to Hereward the Wake. The original manor was destroyed by Cromwell's troops in 1645, after which this farmhouse was constructed. The cottage is two storeys high and features coursed stone with ashlar rusticated quoins, along with stone-capped gable ends. It has a steep roof made of old slate with red ridge tiles and two chimneys. The building has four windows with flat wood lintels and modern casements, a modern ground floor French window, and a plain modern door with a wood lintel.
