Description
The Gothick ruin and cascade, located 200 meters north-west of Belton House, is an early 18th-century structure that was restored in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of random rubble and natural rock, featuring fragments of 14th-century stonework. At the eastern end, adjacent to the River Witham, there are two low arches and a restored sluice to their left. To the right, a taller section of wall includes an unglazed 14th-century two-light window. To the west, there is a cascade that is spanned at its downstream end by a segment-arched stone footbridge, which has renewed rustic timber balustrades. This building is one of several estate structures commissioned by Sir John Brownlow, Viscount Tyrconnel, of Belton House, between 1702 and 1754. It is situated within Belton Park, which is listed on the Garden Register at grade I.
