Description

The North and South Gate Lodges, along with the gates and gate piers, date from around 1840 and are designed in the Early Georgian style, possibly by Samuel Gray for the Bertie family. These structures are built from ashlar stone with rusticated quoins and feature a moulded plinth and cast iron elements.

The central pair of cast iron gates includes circles on the outer rails, scrolled lower panels, and a central circle with a scrolled motif. Above the gates is a scrolled overthrow that displays a central coat of arms. The gates are flanked by single square rusticated gate piers topped with bolection moulded cornices and life-sized busts of crowned wild men. The pedestrian gates on either side have rails adorned with curlicues and central circles that bear the Bertie Arms, set within semi-circular headed arches featuring dropped keystones. The flanking walls also have moulded cornices.

The square lodges are characterized by rusticated quoins, plain friezes, and moulded cornices, with plain parapets that include balustraded panels and plain angle piers. Each lodge has a single glazing bar sash window within a bolection moulded ashlar surround. The side fronts of the lodges feature half-glazed doors in moulded ashlar surrounds, complete with pulvinated friezes and cornices. The ramped and curving screen walls on either side start with square ashlar piers and end in square rusticated pillars, all of which have moulded cornices and ball finials.
