Description
No 1 is a house built around 1830 as the mill owner's residence for Kings Mill. It features coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and Collyweston slate roofs, which have raised coped gables with moulded kneelers. The building has a single ashlar stack, a chamfered plinth, a chamfered first floor band, and a moulded eaves band, along with flush ashlar quoins. The double gabled street front includes a single six-panel door set in a chamfered ashlar surround, above which is a large glazing bar sash, and above that, a smaller similar sash.
The main garden front is two storeys plus attics and has three bays. The ground floor is partially obscured by a 20th-century lean-to conservatory. The central doorway features double glazed doors and a decorative overlight, framed by a deeply chamfered and moulded surround. On either side of the doorway are three-light mullion windows. Above, there is a central three-light mullion window flanked by single two-light mullion windows. At the top, a central through eaves gabled dormer contains a three-light mullion window, flanked by two slightly corbelled out through eaves gabled dormers, each with a two-light mullion window. All windows have chamfered ashlar surrounds.
Inside, the house boasts a good stick baluster staircase, original fireplaces in some upper rooms, and most original doors. The building is included for its group value only.
