Description

Towngate Farm House, along with its farm buildings, wall, and railings, dates from the early 19th century. The structure is built from coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. It has a slate roof with stone-coped gables and ashlar stacks at the rear, as well as cast iron railings. The farmhouse is three stories high with a three-bay front, a plinth, and three cill bands. It has a T-plan layout. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a Gothick overlight set in a pointed moulded stone surround, accessed by two steps. On either side of the door are tripartite bow sash windows topped with Gothick dentillated cornices and flat lead roofs. The first floor features two glazing bar sashes with ashlar lintels adorned with raised key blocks that bear Classical carved female heads. The second floor has three additional glazing bar sashes. Inside, there is a stick baluster staircase with a wreathed handrail.

To the left of the farmhouse is a lower two-story single-bay service block with a raised gable and two light windows on each floor. Beyond this is a vehicular opening with a timber lintel leading to a single-story farm building that has a planked opening, a raking dormer, and two louvred gabled vents at the ridge. To the right of the farmhouse, the cast iron railings have spearhead terminals atop a low wall with a plinth. The copings beneath the railings are made from re-used sections of rounded arches. To the left of the railings is a pent-roofed structure that contains a flush six-panelled door in a plain surround, while to the right is a similar building.
