Description

The Old Hall is a small country house dating from the 15th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early 17th century and further changes in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and has Collyweston slate roofs with single projecting wall and gable stacks, each topped with paired ashlar shafts and moulded cornices. The building is designed in an L-plan.

Originally, The Old Hall was an open hall from the 15th century, which was floored and extended in the 17th century by adding a parlour block to the right. The front is two storeys high with three bays, including a gabled blank bay on the right. There is an off-centre planked round-headed door with a wave moulded head, flanked by a single three-light window on the left and a single light window on the right. On the first floor, there is a four-light window with a broader king mullion and another single light window. All windows feature ovolo mullions with moulded stone surrounds. The rear wall has a blocked four-centred arched doorway and next to it is a gabled two-storey projection with a 17th-century oak roof finial, likely originally a stair block.

Inside, the hall retains a fine four-centred arched fireplace from around 1600. There is a similar fireplace in the dining room. Building works have uncovered soot-blackened roof timbers and evidence of a louvre in the hall. Additionally, there is a pointed doorway in the left gable wall of the hall, visible only from the inside, which may have been a former service door to the screens passage.
