Description

This is a terrace of three townhouses, built around 1820 and altered in the 20th century. The houses are constructed of brick, with a chamfered brick plinth. They have shallow pitched hipped roofs with deeply overhanging, bracketed eaves, and two brick chimney stacks topped with ashlar. The central house is slightly recessed, with each house projecting slightly to the side of the front door.

The front of the terrace has six windows in each house, with flat brick lintels and original 3x4-pane sash windows. Each house has a six-panel front door with a fanlight, set within a round arched, panelled door surround.

The interior of number 53 retains many original features, including panelled doors, door and window surrounds with shutters, skirting boards, picture rails, and plaster coving. A notable feature is a cantilevered staircase with stick balusters, a turned newel post, and a mahogany handrail. The entrance hall has a stone flagged floor, and the main reception room contains an original painted fireplace and a moulded archway. A back room also has an original painted fireplace, fitted cupboards, and a stone flagged floor. Two further original fireplaces remain on the first floor. The attic room or upper store room has a lime-ash floor.

Numbers 53 and 55 retain original sash windows to the rear, while number 51 was radically extended in the 1960s. Numbers 51 and 55 also retain their original staircases.

A low front terrace with four steps leads to a garden wall, and a stone-capped wall with gate piers fronts the garden. Number 55 has been rendered with tiles on its side elevation.
