Description

2, 4, and 6 North Parade is a house and shop, now functioning as a restaurant. It was built in the early 19th century and underwent alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with stucco dressings and has a slate roof that features a hip on the right side, along with two red brick wall stacks.

The front of the building is two storeys high with a three-bay layout, and there is a three-storey single bay section on the right. The ground floor has two late 19th-century shop fronts. The left shop front includes a central half-glazed door with a bordered light, flanked by shop windows that have panelled pilasters topped with brackets supporting a fascia with a moulded top. To the right, there is a half-glazed door at the angle, flanked by single shop windows that match the left side.

On the first floor, there is a blocked opening flanked by single glazing bar sashes, all featuring segmental brick heads. To the right, there is a single plain sash with a serpentine lintel and keyblock. The second floor has a smaller plain sash. The right side of the front features three additional windows with serpentine lintels on the first floor, and on the second floor, there is a Diocletian window with a rubbed brick surround and a small sash.

The interior has been modified due to its conversion into a restaurant, but one section of the original shop counter has been preserved. This building is included for its group value. Notably, the first woman Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Margaret Thatcher, was born in this house on 13 October 1925.
