Description
The Corby Glen War Memorial is a First World War memorial cross, which has undergone additions and alterations after 1945. It is located on the village green of Corby Glen and was unveiled on 12 December 1920 by the Earl of Ancaster, with dedication by the Revd. Arthur Abbott.
The memorial is made of Cornish granite and features an encircling iron fence. It is designed as a Celtic cross with a wheel-head and a tapered shaft, resting on a tapered rectangular base and a plinth. The arms and shaft are deeply moulded, and a central boss with plaited ornamentation is surrounded by similar bosses on each arm.
The plinth bears the inscription: ‘IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 (names of the Fallen are recorded below) ALSO IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF (names)/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR / ALSO REPORTED MISSING/ IN MALAYA 1956,/ (name)'.
