Description

The boathouse at the south end of Boathouse Pond, located 600 meters east of Belton House, was built between 1838 and 1839 by architect Anthony Salvin. Designed in the style of a Swiss chalet, it features a timber frame with brick nogging, which is rendered and pargetted. The roof is temporarily covered with corrugated iron, and there is a panelled square brick ridge stack. The boathouse is a single storey structure with three narrow windows on either side, with the windows facing the lake being larger. At the landward end, there is a moulded doorcase that holds a Tudor arched weatherstripped door. The opposite end of the building is in a state of ruin, and the entire structure is currently supported by scaffolding. Originally intended as an elaborate landing stage and garden house rather than a boat store, this boathouse is one of several estate buildings designed by Salvin for the first Earl Brownlow around 1838-1839. The building is situated within Belton Park, which is registered as grade I on the Gardens Register.
