Description
12 and 12A Barkston Heath Lane are estate cottages, possibly originally intended as a schoolhouse, built in 1828. They are constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and feature a steeply pitched slate roof. The building is designed in the Tudor Revival style and includes large gables, ridge, and external side wall stacks, each with square coped double flues.
The structure has a plinth and coped gables, with a layout in an L-shape. The windows are primarily 19th-century casements, set within stone surrounds and mullions. The facing gable features a crowstepped design with a stepped-head three-light window that has a label mould. On either side of this gable, there are Tudor arched gateways with moulded coping.
The left side of the building has three-light windows on each floor, flanked by single-light windows, with cornices on the ground floor windows. The right side includes a two-light window and a first-floor single-light oriel window set across the return angle. The rear wing has a Tudor arched doorway, and in the gable, there are two two-light windows. This building is one of several estate structures associated with John, the first Earl Brownlow, built around 1820-1830. Pevsner describes this building as a schoolhouse.
