Description
No. 2 Main Street, also known as the Keeper's House, is an estate cottage that has been converted into a house. It was built around 1838 and features late 20th-century alterations. The building was designed by Anthony Salvin and is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. It has an ashlar ridge stack with three coped square flues, a plinth, quoins, and coped gables with kneelers and finials.
This single-storey building with attics has a T-plan layout and a two-window range. The windows are primarily 19th-century casements with stone surrounds and chamfered mullions. The gabled wing on the right has a blank shield above and a square stone bay window with a hipped roof and a three-light cross casement below. The left range features a through-eaves dormer with a coped gable and a two-light window, along with a three-light window with a cornice to the right. The right return has a larger gabled through-eaves dormer with a two-light window, while the rear has 20th-century fenestration.
This building is one of several estate structures designed by Salvin for John, the first Earl Brownlow, of Belton House.
