Description
Nos. 8 and 9 Main Street are estate cottages, now functioning as houses, built in the mid-19th century with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The cottages are constructed of red brick, featuring ashlar and brick dressings, and are topped with slate roofs. They exhibit a Jacobean Revival style, characterized by a plinth, quoins, a first-floor band, and coped gables with kneelers and ball finials. The buildings are single storey plus attics and have a two-window range. The windows are adorned with stone surrounds and chamfered mullions, and include cast-iron lattice glazing bars. There are two through-eaves dormers with shaped gables and two-light windows. The main entrance is an off-centre 20th-century door, flanked by three-light windows, with a single-light window to the left. The left return features two single-light windows and a blank shield above, along with a similar window and another 20th-century door below. These cottages were originally provided for workers on the Belton estate by the Brownlow family of Belton House.
