Description
Keeper's Cottage is a pair of estate cottages, now functioning as a house, built in the early 19th century with some alterations made in the late 20th century. It is possibly designed by Jeffry Wyatville. The cottage is constructed of red brick and features hipped slate roofs, with a central concrete block ridge stack and a smaller brick stack at the rear. The building stands two storeys high and consists of three bays.
Most of the windows are glazing bar sashes, some of which have slight segmental heads. The central section has a 9-pane sash window above and a 16-pane sash window below. On either side of this central block, there is a single-storey hipped porch that runs the entire length of the block, which has a blocked doorway at the front. The right side of the cottage features three 16-pane sash windows flanked by smaller two-light casements, while the left side has a board door and a hipped projection with a segment-headed 12-pane sash window. To the right of this projection is a 20th-century French window, followed by another segment-headed 12-pane sash window.
This estate cottage was built to accommodate workers on the Belton estate by the Brownlow family of Belton House. The architectural style of the building bears some resemblance to the Waterloo Cottages, which are confirmed to be designed by Wyatville.
