Description
Nos 21 and 21A on High Street are a pair of buildings dating from the mid-18th century, located at the corner of Ironmonger Street. They are three storeys tall with attics, constructed in ashlar stone. The roof is hipped and covered with stone slates, featuring one hipped dormer. The buildings have a small panelled parapet and a moulded stone chimney stack inscribed with '1793 T.E.'.
The front elevation includes two windows with heavy stepped rusticated surrounds and five-part keystones. The double-hung sash windows have glazing bars, and there is a band that continues cills on the top floor. Fluted Roman Doric pilasters frame the facade from the second storey to the cornice, which projects forward over the pilasters.
The return frontage to Ironmonger Street includes No 7, which has a stack dated 1732. This elevation features two hipped dormers and a window arrangement of 2-1-2, with rusticated surrounds and Doric pilasters similar to those on the High Street side.
Nos 14 to 31 and the Public Library form a group with these buildings.
