Description
Ayton House and Home Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into two houses. It was built in the late 17th century and underwent extensions and alterations in the mid-18th century, around 1800, and again in 1850. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, while the left side features red brick. The roofs are made of Collyweston slate and include three gable stacks and a single ridge ashlar stack.
The structure has a T-plan with an addition and is two stories plus an attic. The front has three bays, with a dentillated eaves cornice on the left side, and the right bay is advanced and gabled. On the left side, there are two canted glazing bar sash bay windows with flat lead roofs, and to the right, there is another glazing bar sash window. The first floor features five similar windows, all with plain ashlar lintels, except for the upper window on the right, which retains part of its earlier chamfered surround. In the garret, there is a blocked 17th-century light.
On the right front, there are two mid-19th century margin lights on the ground floor and two glazing bar sashes above. The roof has two gabled dormers with two-light casements and slate-hung cheeks. Inside, there is an angled fireplace, two semi-circular headed archways with stepped keyblocks, and the staircase features dado panelling.
