Description

This is an early 17th-century house with alterations dating to the 19th century and around 1937. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a plain tiled roof with stone-coped gables, two gable ashlar stacks, and a large external wall stack facing the roadside. The house follows a T-plan, comprising two parallel ranges. It is two stories high with attics. The Main Street elevation has three irregular bays; the bay to the right has a parapet, and the bay to the left is a recessed addition to the original house. The ground floor features a four-light ovolo moulded mullion window with a cornice, above which is a similar window. To its left is a smaller three-light window with wooden diamond mullions. Later additions on the right side include a two-light stone mullioned window to the first floor and a three-light mullioned window to the ground floor, plus a pair of single-light windows to the first floor; all windows have leaded lights. The right-hand side front has a six-light ovolo moulded mullioned parlour window with a king mullion and cornice. Above this is a four-light cavetto mullioned window with a hood mould, and the attic has a three-light ovolo moulded mullioned window with a cornice. The rear range was altered in the 19th century in a matching style. Inside, the original external doorway remains, featuring a four-centred arched head with a wave-moulded stone surround. The parlour has a moulded stone fireplace surround set within full-height panelling from the early 17th century, incorporating Doric fluted pilasters and diamond medallion bases, a reeded frieze with fluted brackets and a cornice. The overmantle has two panels containing guilloche moulded pilasters and ornate arches. The girder above the parlour has chip-carved chamfers with designs reminiscent of oak chest panels. The dining room retains full-height painted panelling from the 17th century, deeply chamfered beams, and a rectangular stone fireplace surround. On the first floor, above the parlour, the girder is deeply chamfered with diagonal reed moulding, alongside a chip-carved rosette and elaborate stepped shield-shaped stops.
