Description

A pair of estate cottages, now houses, was built in 1817 as accommodation for workers on the Belton estate. The design is attributed to Jeffry Wyatville and later 19th-century additions were made. The cottages are constructed of brick, now rendered, with ashlar dressings and gabled and hipped slate roofs. A central ridge stack features six diagonally set square flues, along with two rear gable stacks added in the late 19th century. The cottages have chamfered plinths and a single storey with attics, arranged with a two-window front. The main east front has two hipped through-eaves dormers, each containing a two-light casement. Below, there are two two-light casements within ashlar surrounds. Set back hipped porches are positioned on either side, the right one containing a four-centred arched doorway with a six-panel door, and a small round-headed lancet window with a matching surround on the return. The left porch mirrors this design, with the door and window reversed. A tall stair window with an ashlar surround is present on the north side, and a similar window on the south side. A 19th-century addition to the south has two through-eaves gabled dormers with two-light casements. Below, a doorway is sheltered by a gabled wooden porch, flanked to the right by a canted bay window, and to the left by two two-light casements. The cottages are among several estate buildings designed by Wyatville for the first Earl Brownlow of Belton House, between approximately 1815 and 1840.
