Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a church built between 1840 and 1841, with extensions added in 1883 and 1884. It measures 83 by 53 feet and is constructed from Ancaster stone. The architect was A. Salvin, and it was built by the local firm of Wilson and Collingwood, with support from Lady Brownlow and a contribution from Queen Adelaide. The church is designed in a plain early English style and features a short window tower with pinnacles. The aisles were widened during the 1883-1884 renovations, which also included the rebuilding of the chancel. Inside, there are low circular piers. The south transept contains St. George's chapel, which serves as a war memorial and features five lancet windows with stained glass created in 1911 by Archibald Nicholson of Lincoln's Inn, replicating 14th-century glass found at Chartres.
