Description

Gardeners Cottage is a building dating from around 1723, possibly designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a decorative tiled facetted roof topped with a wooden finial shaped like a pineapple. The cottage has a single ridge yellow brick chimney stack with an ashlar base and a moulded top.

The structure has a rectangular plan with a facetted end front and is a single storey with attics. The front has three bays, a plinth, rusticated quoins, a plain frieze with raised panels, and a moulded cornice. The central entrance is a semi-circular panelled door with a vermiculated surface, flanked by fixed glazing bar lights. All openings are semi-circular headed with stepped reveals and keyblocks.

In the roof, there is a semi-circular headed dormer with scrolled sides, ball finials, and a leaded roof. The sides of the cottage are made of squared limestone rubble and feature pairs of three-light glazing bar windows. Additionally, there are two pedimented dormers with glazing bar lights and rendered cheeks. This cottage is located in Grimsthorpe Park and is part of the building work commissioned by the First Duke of Ancaster.
