Description

The tomb at the east end of the Church of St. Michael, dedicated to the Hon. Elizabeth Susan Willoughby, was built in 1853. It features a tomb chest and a canopy made of polished pink marble and ashlar. The canopy is designed in the Gothic style, with a gabled and arcaded structure. The sides of the tomb chest have heraldic lozenges set in cusped panels, and the base is adorned with a quatrefoil frieze and fleurons at the cornice. An inscription commemorating the Hon. Elizabeth Susan Willoughby runs along the top. The arcades consist of pointed arches supported by circular marble columns, which have annular capitals and continuous hood moulds featuring human heads and floral stops. The ashlar roof is designed to resemble stone slates, and the gables include single quatrefoils set within circles. Additionally, the gable and eaves are decorated with ballflower ornament.
