Description

The Griffin Inn is a public house dating from the 17th century, which was extended and extensively remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of squared limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof featuring raised stone coped gables with finials and two moulded stone ridge stacks. The building has an L-plan layout and is two stories high with a five-bay front. The end bays are gabled and connected by an embattled parapet.

The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door set within a projecting gabled ashlar porch. This porch has a four-centred chamfered outer arch, pointed single Gothick side lights, and a moulded parapet topped by a fine cast bronze griffin. Flanking the door are pairs of three-light windows. On the first floor, there is a central two-light window flanked by pairs of three-light windows, and the gables also feature two-light windows. All windows have chamfered mullions, hood moulds, and glazing bar sashes.

To the left, the original 17th-century block has eaves that face the street. The two-story street front originally had five bays, with a central six-panelled door and a bordered overlight, but now only has two glazing bar sashes to the left. The first floor has two similar windows. All openings, including those that are blocked, have timber lintels.
