Description
The Antique Shop is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the late 18th century, with a 20th-century shop front. It is constructed of rendered brick and has a slate roof with two gable stacks. The left gable is coped, and the building features bracketed wooden eaves. It stands two storeys plus an attic and has three bays.
The central doorway has a panelled door with a reveal, an ornate fanlight, and a moulded surround with a small keystone. Flanking the doorway are single fluted half columns with urns on dosserets, topped by an open pediment. To the left is the 20th-century projecting shop front, which includes a partially glazed door and a large fixed window, along with single outer pilasters and an entablature. To the right of the central doorway is a plain sash window, with three similar sashes above, all featuring small moulded hoods. The attic contains two dormers, each with a single two-light casement.
Attached to the side wall of the shop and extending in front of the house is a low brick and render wall topped with decorative wrought iron railings and a small gateway. Inside, there is an 18th-century dogleg staircase with turned balusters and a raking moulded handrail, along with 18th-century panelled doors throughout, some with L hinges and others with moulded architraves featuring patera. This building is reputed to be the birthplace of the famous highwayman Dick Turpin.
