Description
Gamlyn's Almshouses were founded in 1501 and rebuilt in 1843-1844. They are designed in a Gothic style with a quadrangular layout, featuring three blocks of two storeys constructed from red brick with ashlar dressings. Each block has six rectangular windows with two pointed lights, Gothic glazing, and dripmoulds, along with two slit windows. The blocks each have a central gable, and the doors are topped with four-centred arches and rectangular dripmoulds with foliated terminals. There are pinnacles at both the street and gable ends of the centre block. The side gables display cartouches, and there are oriel windows in the gable ends facing the road, along with crenellated parapets and leaded lights. The centre block has an oriel window that projects slightly and is supported by buttressed quoins. The building stands on a brick plinth and has modern roofs. There is a very low garden wall along the road, which includes two modern iron gates. Gamlyn's Almshouses, numbered 3 to 8 consecutively, along with the former stables to No 3 and the garden wall to the south of No 4, form a group.
