Description
Carre's Grammar School is a building that was rebuilt in 1834 by Charles Kirk, originating from a school founded in the 16th century. It is designed in the Tudor Gothic style, constructed from ashlar and red brick, and features slate roofs. The main entrance has three storeys, three windows, and two gables with moulded capping and finials. The central door has a four-centred arch, and the rectangular mullioned hung sash windows, which have two lights and glazing bars, are all adorned with moulded labels. Above the door, there is a shield with arms and a rectangular dripmould. On either side of the main building, there are single-storey structures made of ashlar, each featuring one mullioned window. These are connected to the main building by plain walls that have central doorways with four-centred arches. The entrance is flanked by 'Gothic' gate piers, although there are no railings. There are early and mid-20th century additions in red brick. Carre's Charity, along with Nos 38 and 40, forms a group.
