Description
Carre's Charity is a building founded in 1636 and restored in 1857, featuring a mid-19th century rebuild of a 17th century foundation in a 'Gothick' style. It stands two storeys tall, constructed of coursed stone with a stone slate roof and stone stacks. The façade includes three projecting porches beneath gables and four windows with three lights, separated by mullions. There is a balcony on the second storey and four-centred arched doorways. The centre gable displays a coat of arms above two pointed doorways with wrought iron hinges. A low stone wall borders the road. To the south side, No 38 is a single storey, one-window building of similar construction, gabled to the road and featuring crenellations. Above its door, which has decorative iron hinges, is the legend 'Savings Bank'. Carre's Charity, along with Nos 38 and 40, forms a group.
