Description

The Church of the Holy Cross is a parish church built in 1848, constructed from coursed limestone rubble and ashlar with ashlar dressings. It features a slate roof with coped gables and kneelers. The nave and chancel are under a single roof and include a western porch and a bellcote. The exterior has a chamfered plinth, cill band, and eaves band, along with buttresses that have set-offs. The west front showcases a gabled porch with diagonal buttresses and a pointed arched doorway framed by a double arched surround. The inner arch is plain chamfered, while the outer arch is moulded and chamfered, supported by shafts with plain capitals, and features a hood mould with label stops. Above the doorway is a single trefoil window in a trilobed surround, and the gable is topped with a single gabled bellcote.

The north and south walls are identical, each with five pointed lancet windows in chamfered surrounds, complete with hoodmoulds and label stops. The east front, believed to be a faithful reproduction of its medieval predecessor, has a pair of pointed lancets in chamfered inner surrounds, with deeply moulded outer arches supported by shafts that have moulded capitals. The central pair of shafts are ringed, and above them is a mandala-shaped window in a plain chamfered surround.

Inside, there is a plain chamfered chancel arch with octagonal responds, and a twin arched piscina featuring a reused 12th-century octagonal shaft with a plain capital. The western gallery contains an organ and a wall tablet dedicated to Richard T Welby from 1856. The church is furnished with 19th-century wooden pews, a pulpit, and roofs, as well as an octagonal font.
