Description
Carre's Hospital, including the pump and sundial in the forecourt and the wall along Carre Street, is a notable 19th-century building designed by architect H. E. Kendall. The east range, which has nine bays, was built in 1830, while the seven-bay south range was constructed between 1841 and 1846. This L-shaped complex consists of early 19th-century almshouses made of ashlar stone, showcasing a fine 'Gothick' design over two storeys. It features five projecting porches with four-centred entrance arches and corner buttresses. Each section has three windows, with two-light mullion windows on the sides and labels above the central windows. The south range's centre includes a gable-ended chapel adorned with crocketed pinnacles and a traceried 'Perpendicular' window above the door, which is framed in a rectangular shape. The building has slate roofs and an embattled parapet. In front, there is a garden with a pump and sundial, along with a paved walkway beside the street. A stone wall is located to the right, and there is an old gas lamp standard, although the railings to the wall are missing. Carre's Hospital and the adjacent properties numbered 2-8 (even) form a cohesive group.
