Description

Kingfisher Cottage is a house built around 1835 by W A Nicholson. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with ashlar coped gables, moulded kneelers, and finials. The building has a series of four, three, and two moulded and chamfered ashlar gable stacks, along with three similar white brick and ashlar gable stacks. Notable architectural details include a chamfered ashlar plinth, a moulded band at the first floor, and flush quoins.

The cottage is a single storey plus attics and has a T-plan layout. The east front showcases a central shaped gabled projecting porch with a moulded, four-centred arched ashlar door surround, a four-panel door, and a strapwork gable. To the left, there is a projecting gabled cross wing featuring a canted bay window topped with an ornate strapwork parapet. To the right, a two-light window with a strapwork gable is followed by a single storey wing that has a three-light window beneath a shaped through eaves gable. Above, there is a two-light window to the left with a strapwork gable and a shaped gable dormer to the right, which also contains a two-light window.

The south front includes two three-light windows with strapwork gables, and above them are three continuous shaped gable dormers, each with a two-light window. The central window projects slightly and is supported by a shaped bracket. All windows feature glazing bar casements within moulded ashlar surrounds; the lower windows have mullions and transoms, while the upper windows only have mullions. This cottage is part of the complete estate village established by the Chaplin family of Blankney Hall.
