Description
The Post Office and attached cottage, built around 1835 by W A Nicholson, is located on Main Street in Blankney. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features steeply pitched slate roofs, ashlar coped gables, and moulded kneelers. The building has a Y-plan layout and is a single storey plus attic.
The south-facing entrance front has four bays, with an off-centre doorway that includes a contemporary door framed by a moulded ashlar four-centred arched surround. To the right of the door are a two-light window and a single light window, while to the left is another single light window, partially blocked by a wall post box. Above the door is a similar window, and to the left is a two-light through eaves dormer that projects slightly and is supported on brackets.
The gabled south-west corner features a four-light canted ashlar bay window, with a two-light window above it under a drip mould. The west-facing front has three bays, with two two-light windows on the left and a single light window on the right. Above, to the left, are two two-light through eaves gabled dormers, also projecting slightly and supported on brackets. All windows have recessed and chamfered mullion surrounds, with glazing bar casements. This building is part of the complete estate village built for the Chaplin family of Blankney Hall.
